Mountainbike & Sail in Northern Norway — island trails reached by yacht

Mountainbike & Sail: Island Trail Riding by Yacht in Northern Norway

Island-hop by yacht to MTB trails no shuttle can reach.

Mountain biking in Northern Norway is exceptional. The islands around Tromsø — Kvaløya, Ringvassøya, Senja — have trail networks that most mountain bikers have never heard of, in terrain that produces the kind of technical, scenic riding that people travel to Whistler or the Dolomites to find.

The problem is access. The best trails are not near roads. The most remote island descents require a boat to reach the start. And connecting multiple islands into a multi-day riding itinerary is not possible by any vehicle other than a yacht.

Boreal Yachting's Mountainbike & Sail was created to solve this. The yacht is your shuttle, your hotel, and your logistics — and it takes you to trails that no land-based mountain biker has ever ridden.

    The Concept

Mountainbike & Sail works like this: the yacht sails overnight to the next island or the next fjord while you sleep. In the morning, you offload the bikes, ride the trails, and return to the boat. Then the yacht moves again.

In a week, you might ride on four or five completely different islands, each with its own trail character: technical rooty singletrack through birch forest on one, open moorland doubletrack on another, and on the third, a purpose-built flow trail descending from a 600-metre summit to the sea that you would never have found on Google Maps, and that sees perhaps a handful of riders a year.

    The Terrain

    Tromsø archipelago

The primary area for Mountainbike & Sail is the archipelago immediately surrounding Tromsø. Kvaløya has established trail networks suitable for a range of ability levels, plus remote terrain accessible only by boat in the island's more distant corners. Ringvassøya is less developed but offers excellent natural terrain.

    Senja

Senja is Norway's second largest island and largely undiscovered by the international mountain biking community. The western coast, with its dramatic Senjatind peaks rising from the sea, offers exceptional high-to-low riding on terrain that appears untouched by any trail building. A yacht can drop you at the base of these peaks without any road approach.

    The Lyngen Peninsula

The Lyngen Peninsula, better known for Ski & Sail in winter, offers outstanding summer mountain biking on alpine terrain with views that reach across the Lyngenfjord to peaks in Finland. The riding here is higher and more demanding — suited to experienced riders looking for something more alpine in character.

    Ability Level

Boreal's Mountainbike & Sail trips are not suitable for beginners. The terrain involves technical natural features, significant elevation gain, and riding in remote locations without road access. A reasonable minimum is regular off-road riding experience and comfort with technical singletrack.

Our local guides know which trails match which ability levels, and the itinerary is always calibrated to the group. If you have a group of strong technical riders, the routes go to the hardest terrain available. If the group is more varied, we find the balance.

    The Bikes

Boreal partners with Tromsø Outdoor, Tromsø's premier outdoor equipment retailer, for bike hire. They carry a quality fleet of trail and enduro bikes suitable for the terrain in this area. If you prefer to bring your own bike, the yacht has storage space.

Recommended: trail hardtail or full suspension bike with 130–160mm travel. Tubeless tyres recommended. Helmet essential; knee pads recommended on technical terrain.

    When to Go

Summer season: June through September. July and August offer the warmest temperatures and the driest conditions. June has the advantage of midnight sun and very few other people on any of the trails. September offers autumn colours — Northern Norway's birch forests in full colour, combined with the first northern lights of the season, is a combination that photographs exceptionally.
