    Whale Sailing

Whale Sailing is a whole-boat winter voyage in the fjords north of Tromsø, during the weeks when orca and humpback whales follow the herring inshore. A sailing yacht is quiet, so we can shut down the engine, drift, and let the animals decide how close the encounter gets.

    Following the herring

Every autumn, Norwegian spring-spawning herring move into the fjords of Northern Norway to overwinter. Orca and humpback whales follow them, and for a few weeks the fjords hold concentrations of feeding whales that are hard to match anywhere in Europe.

Exactly which fjord the herring choose changes from year to year, and it has moved considerably over the past two decades. A boat that lives on this coast, with a skipper who talks to the fishing fleet, is the practical way to be in the right place.

We work under the engine only when we need to. Once whales are in sight we slow down, hold a respectful distance, and often stop entirely. Orca frequently come to the boat on their own terms.

    Cold, dark and worth it

The whale season overlaps with the polar night. Usable light lasts roughly four to six hours in November, less in December. This concentrates the day: you are on deck for the light, and inside a heated saloon for the rest.

Aurora is a regular companion on this trip. The same clear nights that make the sky worth watching also make the following day good for spotting blows on a flat sea.

Days end at anchor. There is no long crossing back to town in the dark, which is the main difference between this and a day tour.

    A typical week

The route is decided by where the herring are and what the weather does. This is what a good few days tend to look like.

    Day 1 — Tromsø

Board in the afternoon and complete the safety briefing before we leave the quay.

An evening passage north or east depending on the latest reports from the fleet.

Middle days — the whale fjords

On deck for first light, looking for blows and gull activity, which usually gives the whales away.

Engine off when we find them, and time on the water for as long as it lasts.

Back to anchor in the afternoon dark. Aurora watch after dinner when the sky is clear.

Final day — back to Tromsø

A last morning search on the way south.

    The boat

Whale voyages sail on heated, Arctic-prepared vessels with good deck space and clear sight lines. A quiet hull matters here: we spend a lot of the day drifting with the engine off.

    Who this is for

    • Wildlife watchers and photographers who will trade comfort for time on the water.
    • Small groups taking the whole boat for four nights or more.
    • Guests who want whales and aurora in the same trip.
    • People happy to be outside in the cold for hours.

Whales are wild animals in an area that changes every season. If you need a guaranteed sighting on a fixed date, book a shorter trip with a lower expectation, or choose a different experience.

    Practical

    Fitness and experience

No sailing experience needed. You should be steady on a moving deck and able to stand outside in the cold for long stretches.

    What to bring

Serious winter clothing: thermal layers, insulated outer shell, warm boots, hat and two pairs of gloves. Bring binoculars and more camera batteries than you think you need.

    Weather and light

November to January brings four to six hours of twilight and temperatures between minus 10 and plus 3°C. Wind decides how much water we can cover.

    Getting to Tromsø

Direct winter flights from Oslo and several European cities. The harbour is a short taxi ride from the airport.

    Questions guests ask

    Are whale sightings guaranteed?
No. In a normal season the chances over four nights are high, but the herring move and so do the whales.
Can we swim with the whales?
Not as part of the standard trip. In-water activity is tightly regulated in Norway and needs separate arrangement, a drysuit and prior experience. Ask us before you book.
How close do the whales come?
We keep a respectful distance and never chase. Orca sometimes approach the boat themselves, and those are the best encounters.
    When is the season?
Late October to late January, with November and December usually the most consistent weeks.
Will we see the northern lights as well?
Often. The season sits inside the polar night, so any clear evening is a candidate.
    Is this suitable for children?
On a private charter, yes, provided they can cope with cold and long quiet periods on deck. Talk to us about ages first.
