Lyngen Ski & Sail
Lyngen Ski & Sail is a whole-boat ski touring week focused entirely on the Lyngen Alps, the 90-kilometre chain of peaks north-east of Tromsø. The yacht anchors in Lyngenfjord and its side fjords, so every ascent starts at sea level and every descent finishes near the boat.

When is the ski touring season in the Lyngen Alps?
The ski touring season in the Lyngen Alps runs from late February to early May. The peninsula runs 90 kilometres between Ullsfjord and Lyngenfjord, holding more than 140 glaciers and a high point of 1,834 metres at Jiehkkevárri. Almost every classic line in the range can be reached from the water.
Ascents typically gain 900 to 1,400 metres over four to eight hours. Gradients run from broad 25 to 30 degree glacier slopes to couloirs beyond 40 degrees for groups with the skills and the conditions for them.
Sheltered behind the mainland, Lyngen usually holds colder, drier snow than the outer coast, and the season runs reliably from late February to early May.
Why does the boat matter here?
The boat matters here because Lyngen can be skied from a car or a lodge, but the road only touches one side of the fjord and the drives are long. From an anchorage, the walk to the snow is measured in minutes.
It also spreads the group out. On a busy April weekend the roadside classics carry a queue of skinning tracks; the boat puts you on a slope with nobody on it.
The guide and the skipper work as a pair: one reads the avalanche bulletin and the terrain, the other reads the wind and where the boat can safely lie.
A typical week
The route is decided by snow, weather and the people on board. This is what a good week tends to look like.
Day 1 — Tromsø
Board in Tromsø, gear check with the guide and safety briefing with the skipper.
An evening passage towards Ullsfjord or Lyngenfjord.
Days 2 to 6 — the Lyngen Alps
Ashore after breakfast for an ascent of 900 to 1,400 metres.
Ski back towards the fjord, tender to the boat, then hot food and a shower.
Evening move to the next anchorage while the group looks at tomorrow's options.
Final day — back to Tromsø
A shorter tour near Ullsfjord if the weather allows, then the sail west.

Practical
What fitness and experience do I need?
You need solid ski touring experience and the fitness for six consecutive days of 900 metres or more. Comfort on variable snow matters more than style.
What should I bring?
You should bring touring skis, boots, skins, poles, harness-compatible pack, ski crampons, and layers for minus 15°C to rain. Transceiver, shovel and probe are on board.
What are the weather and snow like?
March and April are the most reliable months. Late February is colder and darker; May brings spring snow and skiing to the waterline.
How do I get to Tromsø?
You reach Tromsø on direct flights from Oslo and several European cities. Arrive the day before to protect against delays.
