Route planning in Northern Norway is mostly about tide, wind direction and how far you are willing to sail in a day. This note sets out realistic distances from Tromsø, the sheltered inside passages, and which legs to keep flexible.
These itineraries and notes cover route suggestions, harbour information and practical tips for Tromsø, Senja, Lofoten and the Lyngen Alps, with links to detailed charts and harbour guides.
Northern Norway offers a wide range of sailing conditions. The inner waterways — fjords and sounds protected by islands — suit less experienced crews. The outer coast is more exposed, with more open scenery and stronger wind.
Key considerations: the sailing season runs from May to September, with the warmest and calmest conditions in July. The midnight sun, from late May to late July, allows sailing and exploring at any hour. Tidal currents can be strong in narrow sounds, so always check the tide tables.
Harbour infrastructure: guest harbours with full services are available in Tromsø, Harstad, Svolvær and several smaller towns. Between these are simple quays, floating docks and natural anchorages. Charterers receive a harbour guide with GPS coordinates, approach notes and local tips.
Safety: weather in Northern Norway can change quickly. Always carry an up-to-date forecast and plan alternative ports. VHF radio, AIS and radar are standard equipment on our charter yachts, and the Norwegian Coast Guard and Rescue Service cover the region.
