Prominent mountains, massive glaciers and mesmerising landscapes make the Lyngen Alps one of the world's finest hiking destinations. Spend a week aboard a yacht, with each day a new trail — from gentle coastal walks to challenging ridge traverses. The combination of sailing and trekking gives you access to terrain that road-based hikers can only dream of.
The Lyngen Alps are a 90-kilometre-long mountain range rising directly from the fjords. Peaks reach up to 1,834 metres, and the Lyngen glacier — mainland Norway's most northern glacier — descends to just a few hundred metres above sea level. The geology is dramatic: ancient oceanic crust thrust up by tectonic forces millions of years ago.
Our sailing-hiking itineraries access trailheads that have no road connections. The yacht drops you at a beach or jetty at the base of a mountain, and you hike up — sometimes on established trails, sometimes on open terrain above the treeline. The views across the fjords, glaciers, and islands are breathtaking.
The hiking season runs from June to September, with the longest days and warmest temperatures in July. Above the treeline you walk through alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers, past crystal-clear mountain lakes, and along ridges with views stretching to the ocean in every direction.
No two days are the same. One day might be a gentle coastal walk through birch forest to a secluded beach; the next, a challenging ascent of a 1,200-metre peak with scrambling sections and glacier views. The yacht provides a comfortable home between hikes, with warm meals, hot showers, and a cosy saloon to relax in.
