Yacht Charter
Bareboat Charter in Northern Norway
Your Arctic adventure, your way — captain your own fully equipped sailing yacht.
Bareboat sailing is the purest form of the charter experience. No skipper to consult, no guide to follow. You choose the anchorage, you set the pace, you decide whether to sail through the night or spend three days in the same cove because the light and the fishing are too good to leave.
In Northern Norway, bareboat charter puts you in command of some of the most extraordinary sailing waters in the world. Lofoten's jagged archipelago, the island chains around Tromsø, the vast and intricate coastline of Vesterålen — these are waters that experienced sailors travel across Europe to reach. And then they come back.
Boreal Yachting operates Northern Norway's largest Arctic charter fleet. This page covers everything you need to know to plan a bareboat trip with us.
The Fleet
Boreal's bareboat fleet runs from 40 to 51 feet, all fully equipped for Arctic conditions. Our vessels include Delphia 47 and Bavaria 51 models — serious blue-water cruising yachts with the range, the seakeeping, and the accommodation quality that extended Arctic sailing requires.
All boats are equipped with: chart plotter with Norwegian coastal charts, VHF radio, AIS, life raft, EPIRB, comprehensive first aid kit, warm bedding and duvets, full galley equipment, and Arctic-appropriate safety gear. We do not send bareboat guests into Norwegian waters without proper preparation.
Qualifications Required
Norwegian law requires that anyone born after 1 January 1980 operating a recreational vessel over 8 metres in length holds a recognised boating licence. All nationals of EU/EEA countries may use valid licences issued in their home country.
Beyond the legal minimum, Boreal requires documented experience appropriate to the conditions of Northern Norway. Arctic sailing is not Mediterranean sailing. Conditions change rapidly. Tidal streams are significant in parts of the archipelago. Weather can deteriorate faster than a forecast suggests.
When you enquire, we will ask for a skipper CV covering previous offshore experience, qualifications held, and familiarity with navigating in tidal waters and variable conditions. We assess each application individually — the goal is to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip, not to create unnecessary barriers.
The Sailing Areas
Lofoten and Vesterålen (base: Harstad)
The Lofoten archipelago is the most iconic sailing ground in Northern Norway and the destination most bareboat guests plan for their first Arctic charter. The approach across the Vestfjorden, the narrow sounds between the islands, the anchorages below the great peaks — this is sailing at its most memorable.
Boreal operates its Lofoten fleet from Harstad, directly served by Harstad/Narvik Airport (EVE). The base has all facilities and is in the city centre, making provisioning easy.
Tromsø and the archipelago (base: Tromsø)
The islands around Tromsø — Kvaløya, Ringvassøya, Senja — offer excellent sailing within easy reach of Boreal's main base. The cruising is more sheltered than the outer Lofoten waters and well suited to sailors stepping up to Arctic sailing for the first time. The scenery is extraordinary and the anchorages are largely uncrowded.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need experience sailing in cold water?
Prior experience in Northern European waters is helpful but not mandatory for the summer season. What matters most is solid offshore sailing experience and the ability to handle a large yacht in variable conditions. Cold-weather clothing and prepared seamanship are more important than prior Arctic experience.
What is the weather like?
Northern Norway summer weather is variable but generally manageable. Wind strengths of 10–20 knots are common; stronger passages occur but can usually be planned around. The key is flexibility — a good bareboat skipper in these waters plans each day with the weather, not against it.
Can I get a skipper if the weather deteriorates?
Boreal maintains a network of experienced local skippers who can be engaged at short notice if a bareboat guest needs additional support. We also provide 24-hour shore contact throughout the charter. See skippered bareboat →
