[Home](/) 2. / What Is An Arctic Adapted Boat Arctic guide # What an Arctic-adapted boat actually means An Arctic-adapted boat is a vessel modified for cold water and cold air: a steel or aluminium hull, cabin heating, insulation against condensation, cold-rated rigging and engine systems, and duplicated navigation and communication equipment. Boreal Yachting operates nine such vessels from Tromsø, sailing Northern Norway and Svalbard. Steel and aluminium tolerate contact with ice and with rock in poorly charted anchorages. Glassfibre does not fail dramatically, but it damages more easily and is harder to repair far from a yard. Hull material is the first thing to ask about on any Svalbard vessel, and the answer should be immediate. ## What does heating and insulation change on board? Heating is not a comfort extra at 69.6°N. Wet gear has to dry overnight, or the next day starts cold and gets worse. Our vessels run diesel-fired heating continuously and carry drying space for outer layers. Insulation matters just as much. An uninsulated metal hull produces condensation that soaks bedding and clothing within a couple of days. ## What equipment should an Arctic sailing vessel carry? Expect radar, duplicated position fixing, paper charts as a fallback, satellite communication for areas beyond mobile coverage, immersion suits sized for everyone on board, a liferaft appropriate to cold water, and an EPIRB. Expect redundancy as a principle rather than a list: two ways to navigate, two ways to communicate, two ways to keep warm. In Svalbard, expect the operator to be able to describe its polar bear protection routines and its reporting to Sysselmesteren på Svalbard without hesitating. ## When is a standard charter yacht enough? In sheltered Northern Norwegian waters in July, in settled weather and with an experienced crew, a well-found standard yacht is a perfectly reasonable boat. The case for an Arctic-adapted vessel is the rest of the year: winter aurora sailing, spring ski touring from the boat, and any Svalbard voyage. That is where heating, insulation and metal construction stop being preferences. ## Common questions How many Arctic-prepared vessels does Boreal Yachting operate? Nine.
