An expedition ship carries 50 to 200 passengers, covers more distance and keeps to a schedule. Boreal Yachting has sailed Svalbard on yachts since 2008 and is an AECO member. From a yacht, Svalbard is quiet. There is no engine noise under sail, no public address system and no queue for a Zodiac. Six to twelve guests go ashore together, and the boat anchors in bays where a ship of 100 metres cannot go. The trade-off is distance. A yacht plans around wind, ice and weather windows, so a week covers a smaller area — typically Isfjorden and the fjords north of Longyearbyen, sometimes Prins Karls Forland and Krossfjorden. ## What does an expedition ship do better? An expedition ship covers ground. With engine power and a stabilised hull it can hold a schedule in weather that keeps a yacht at anchor, which makes a circumnavigation or a far-north itinerary realistic within a fixed number of days. It is also more comfortable in the ordinary sense: a private bathroom, a heated public space large enough to walk about in, a doctor on board, and a formal lecture programme with specialist guides. ## Which is better for seeing wildlife? Neither guarantees anything, and any operator who says otherwise is selling. Both follow the same AECO wildlife guidelines on approach distances and polar bear encounters. A yacht sits low and quiet, which makes close inshore observation of walrus haul-outs, seabird cliffs and Arctic foxes easier. A ship's height and range improve the odds of spotting bears at distance across sea ice. They are different kinds of sighting. ## When should you choose the ship instead? Choose an expedition ship if you are prone to seasickness, want a private bathroom, are travelling as a solo traveller or couple, or want to cover the largest possible area of Svalbard in one voyage. Choose it too if you want a structured lecture programme with specialist scientists on board. A yacht carries a skipper and a guide, not a faculty. Boreal Yachting only operates yachts.
