# One week sailing and trekking: Tromsø and Lyngen Alps

By [Boreal Yachting crew](/about/crew), Skippers and guides, Tromsø

Publication date not available

A week between Tromsø and the Lyngen Alps combines short passages with daily walks from the anchorage. Lyngen holds peaks above 1,500 metres within a few kilometres of the water, so the boat replaces both the road and the car park.

One week sailing and trekking: Tromsø and Lyngen Alps.

The Lyngen Alps rise almost 1,900 metres straight from the sea, a day's sail from Tromsø. A week aboard the yacht means sleeping in sheltered anchorages beneath glaciated peaks, going ashore each morning for a hike, and sailing on in the afternoon to the next valley. It combines low-impact travel with the comfort of a warm cabin close by.

Day 1 — Tromsø to Ullsfjord: Board the yacht in central Tromsø in the afternoon, settle into the cabin and meet the crew over dinner. A short evening sail leads east through Grøtsundet into Ullsfjord, where the yacht anchors in a sheltered bay with a first view of the Lyngen ridgeline.

Day 2 — Lyngseidet and Goalsevárri: Cross to the Lyngen peninsula and tie up at Lyngseidet. A ridge walk leads up Goalsevárri (760m), with views over the fjord and surrounding peaks. Back on board, the yacht sails south into Kjosen, a narrow inner arm of the fjord lined with waterfalls.

Day 3 — Steindalsbreen glacier: Anchor near Furuflaten and walk into the Steindalen valley to the front of Steindalsbreen, one of the more accessible glaciers in the Lyngen Alps. The trail follows a glacial river through birch forest before opening onto the moraine and the ice itself.

Day 4 — Jægervatnet and Istinden: Sail north to Jaegervassbukt. A full-day hike passes the turquoise Jægervatnet lake and continues to Istinden (1,490m) for those with the experience and conditions, or to a lower viewpoint for a shorter outing. The day ends with a hot meal and sauna or a swim from the boat.

Day 5 — Outer Lyngen and Rottenvik: A relaxed sailing day along the outer Lyngen coast, with a stop in Rottenvik or Nord-Lenangen. Short coastal walks, fishing for cod and saithe from the deck, and time at a quiet anchorage under the midnight sun.

Day 6 — Reinøya or Vanna: Cross back west to one of the wild islands of North Troms. Reinøya offers gentle ridge walks with views back to the Lyngen Alps; Vanna has a more exposed, oceanic character. White-tailed eagles, otters and seals are regular sightings.

Day 7 — Return to Tromsø: A final morning sail back through Grøtsundet to Tromsø, arriving in time for a late breakfast on board before disembarking. The week typically covers 100–150 nautical miles and five to six hikes, adjusted to the group's pace, fitness and the weather.

Included: skippered yacht with private cabins, all meals on board, route planning and local knowledge, safety equipment and access to hiking gear. Hikes are self-guided by default; a certified mountain guide can be added on request, and is recommended for higher summits or shoulder-season trips.

Best season: late June to early September, when the trails are largely snow-free, the midnight sun extends every day, and the inner fjords are at their calmest. Earlier and later in the season the same route becomes a Ski & Sail or aurora trip. Contact us and we will adjust the plan to suit your dates.

### 10 Days from Tromsø to Lofoten

### One week sailing and trekking in Lofoten

A week of sailing and trekking in Lofoten pairs short passages between fishing villages with walks that start at the waterline. The boat carries the group to trailheads with no road, and the season runs from June to September under near-continuous daylight in midsummer.
