Its outer coast is a series of steep headlands and narrow inlets with few roads, while the inner side is sheltered. Senja's outer coast has almost no roads because it is a run of headlands, sea cliffs and narrow inlets that a road could not easily follow. A tourist road reaches a handful of points along it; the rest is water access only, and from an anchorage you can walk ridges that see almost nobody, even in July. Senja's peaks are lower than Lyngen's but steeper for their height. Segla and Hesten are the well-known walks; there are many more with no name on the signposts. ### Is Senja sheltered or exposed? Both. The inner fjords — Gisundet and the channels toward Finnsnes — are calm water in most conditions, while the outer coast is fully exposed to the Norwegian Sea. That gives a skipper two options in one place, which is why Senja often becomes the fallback when the forecast rules out somewhere else. It is also a natural stop on a longer voyage south toward Vesterålen and Lofoten. ## When to go Senja sails much like Tromsø, a fraction milder on the outer coast. ### March to May Ski touring on short, steep lines with the sea below, and lengthening days. The outer coast is exposed in this period; plans shift to the inner side when it blows. ### June to July Midnight sun from around 20 May to 22 July. Warm rock, long walking days and quiet anchorages. Best month for the outer coast, when settled high pressure allows it. ### August to September Autumn colour, returning darkness and the first aurora from late August. The skipper chooses the overnight spot based on wind direction, and it is normal for that choice to change during the day. ### Ashore Paths on Senja are informal and often steep and wet. Walking boots with ankle support are needed, and waterproofs are needed every month of the year. ### Supplies There are small communities with shops at Gryllefjord, Senjahopen and Finnsnes.
